Tigers, White Sox could be a little thin
Sat Aug 26, 2017 3:05 AM

CHICAGO -- The Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox might each be short-handed for the second game of a weekend series at Guaranteed Rate Field.

For the White Sox, Nicky Delmonico (wrist) and Leury Garcia (back) might require more time off to heal. The Tigers, meanwhile, are awaiting the fates of Miguel Cabrera and right-hander Alex Wilson, who appealed suspensions for their roles in Detroit's benches-clearing brawl Thursday against the New York Yankees.

Cabrera started at first base for the Tigers in the first game of the series Friday night, a 3-2 victory for Chicago, and Wilson threw a scoreless inning of relief.

"We'll deal with it when it happens," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said of losing Cabrera from his lineup for multiple games. "He's going to appeal, go through the appeal process and hope it gets knocked down a few games."

Ausmus also received a one-game suspension because Wilson admitted that he intentionally plunked Yankees third baseman Todd Frazier with a pitch after warnings had been issued to both teams. Ausmus cannot serve his suspension until Wilson's appeal is ruled upon.

"In this case, I think honesty was not the best policy," Wilson said. "I was surprised, not for the suspension part, but for the amount (of games). I've started the appeal process, so we'll go through that and see what happens."

It's unknown how long it will take for the appeals to be completed. The Tigers might also be without third baseman Nick Castellanos for a second straight game, after he was a late scratch Friday with soreness in his left wrist that stems from the brawls against the Yankees.

Chicago is also dealing with uncertainty with both Delmonico and Garcia, who each sat out Friday. Manager Rick Renteria hoped to get a positive update about Garcia before the game but was more unsure about Delmonico -- who suffered a wrist injury Thursday against the Minnesota Twins. After an X-ray taken Friday showed no structural damage to the bones in the wrist, Delmonico was unable to swing without pain during batting practice.

Delmonico will now get an MRI to further examine the injury.

"His wrist is sore," Renteria said. "We took an X-ray, and there was nothing structurally (wrong), as far as the regular X-ray is concerned. He took a swing, felt it (again). So we're sending him out to get an MRI and we won't know (more) until we get that back."

The White Sox also put star rookie 2B Yoan Moncada on the 10-day disabled list with a bone contusion in his right shin, which he aggravated Thursday against the Minnesota Twins.

"Every team goes through it," Renteria said. "There is no 'woe is me,' with us. The guys that we insert are going to do their best to do what they're supposed to do, in terms of playing the game. Obviously, right now, we're going to see where we're at with everybody else."

Left-hander Carlos Rodon (2-4, 3.88) will start Saturday for the White Sox. Right-hander Buck Farmer (2-1, 6.62) will start for Detroit.

Rodon is looking to build on a win in his last start when he held the Twins to two runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings on Monday in Chicago. Rodon has 48 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched through his past six starts.

Farmer hasn't pitched for the Tigers since June 18 against the Tampa Bay Rays, when he allowed seven runs in 2 1/3 innings. It will be Farmer's fifth career appearance and second start at Guaranteed Rate Field, where he is 1-0 with a 0.96 ERA and claimed his first career major-league win earlier this season (May 27).
