Phillies expect Segura back in next Marlins matchup

The Philadelphia Phillies have split the first two games of their four-game series with the Miami Marlins, and they're hoping to get their starting shortstop back for the third game Saturday in Philadelphia.

Fresh off a 4-0 win on Friday, thanks in large part to home runs from Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto and Maikel Franco, the Phillies could see the return of starting shortstop Jean Segura.

Segura has not played since April 16 because of a strained left hamstring. With Scott Kingery also injured, the Phillies have been playing Phil Gosselin or Sean Rodriguez at shortstop.

Phillies manager Gabe Kapler wouldn't formally commit to Segura starting on Saturday, but he sounded confident.

"The game plan is to have him available, potentially even start at shortstop," Kapler told reporters.

Segura, who was acquired in an offseason trade from the Seattle Mariners, was off to a solid start this season with a .328 average, five doubles, one triple, one home run and 10 RBIs.

The Phillies will hand the ball to right-hander Jake Arrieta (3-2, 2.65 ERA). On Monday, he allowed seven hits and four runs (three earned) in a 5-1 loss to the host New York Mets.

Following the loss, which featured Harper being ejected for arguing ball and strike calls from the dugout, Arrieta then criticized the team's effort.

"I don't think our guys were ready to play," Arrieta said. "We were flat. The dugout was flat. The defense wasn't good. We didn't throw the ball well as a staff overall. We got beat."

Arrieta will have a chance to erase the memories of that start with a strong outing against the Marlins.

The Marlins won the series opener 3-1 in 10 innings Thursday before being shut out Friday.

Miami will attempt to go ahead in the series by sending Trevor Richards to the mound. He is 0-3 with a 3.72 ERA in five starts. His last win came Sept. 23, 2018, against the Cincinnati Reds.

But in Richards' last start Sunday against Washington, he tied a season-high with seven strikeouts while giving up three runs in 6 1/3 innings.

"My offspeed (stuff) was around the zone better," Richards told reporters. "I left some pitches up that I would have back if I could, but it's OK. Build on this one and keep going."

It's unclear if infielder Neil Walker will be in the starting lineup Saturday. Walker, who had three hits on Thursday, didn't start Friday and drew a walk as a pinch hitter. Walker is dealing with some tightness in his hamstring.

The Marlins managed only five hits Friday and were ultimately shut out for the seventh time this season.

But ever-improving catcher Jorge Alfaro had a pair of hits and continues to show his wide array of skills.

"I think we look at him as what we are trying to help him get to as far as everything," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "Just help him improve in all areas, his catching, his game-calling."
