Giants rookie Beede looks for more against D-backs
Sat Jun 22, 2019 4:32 AM

San Francisco rookie right-hander Tyler Beede, who picked up his first career victory Monday by holding down the Los Angeles Dodgers, goes for his second win Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix.

Beede gave up three hits and one run over six innings to the dangerous Dodgers, working around five walks with the help of seven strikeouts.

"He didn't have the best command I've seen him have, and he figured out a way to make pitches when he needed to and figured out a way to get outs," catcher Stephen Vogt told reporters. "To me, that's the sign of somebody who is trending in the right direction."

Beede (1-2, 6.67 ERA) will try to stay on a positive trend in his sixth start this season. He made his major league debut last season against the Diamondbacks, going four innings in a start on April 10, 2018, allowing two runs and three hits while walking five in a no-decision.

Lack of control has been a theme in his brief career, as he has walked 30 in 36 innings.

"I think everything plays off the fastball location," Beede said. "When I'm locating the heater down and away or riding it up in the zone for a strike, I think that makes that curveball just as good."

He will be facing a Diamondbacks lineup that almost certainly will be without hot-hitting Ketel Marte, who left in the third inning of Friday's game after suffering a left groin cramp while running out an RBI single.

Marte, who is hitting .543 (25 of 46) in the past 11 games, is considered day-to-day.

"I have been looking to give him a day off," said manager Torey Lovullo.

"(Saturday) will probably be that day to just make sure he can work through that and get back on his feet. He's been playing a lot of baseball. He's one of the best players in the National League, and I have found it hard to get him some time off."

Marte, through a translator in the locker room, said it was going to be hard to sit, considering how he's been swinging the bat.

"If I could, I would play 18 innings in a single game with the way I am playing right now," he said.

He added that he might be able to play Sunday.

Arizona has started 0-4 on its nine-game homestand and has lost five consecutive games, tied for its longest skid of the season.

The D-backs will turn to right-hander Zack Godley (3-4, 6.52 ERA) in what could be a bullpen game. Godley lost his place in the rotation earlier this season, last starting May 18 at home against the Giants, when he took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings.

Godley has pitched in relief seven times since then, with mostly good results until his most recent outing. On Sunday in Washington against the Nationals, he yielded six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Godley is 3-4 with a 6.52 ERA in 10 career games (seven starts) vs. San Francisco.

After the Giants won the opener of the three-game series 11-5 on Friday night, Arizona optioned first baseman Kevin Cron to Triple-A Reno. No corresponding move was immediately announced, although the D-backs figure to add a pitcher.
