White Sox aim to net another win over Marlins
Tue Jul 23, 2019 3:17 AM

The visiting Miami Marlins will look to stop a four-game losing streak when they continue their interleague series against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.

With left-hander Caleb Smith set to start for Miami, the Marlins like their chances to return to the win column.

"We always have confidence when we have (Smith) out there," Marlins third baseman Brian Anderson told reporters. "It seems like every time he's out there, he's giving us a quality start and he's going deep into games for us. Any time he's out there, we're definitely confident. Offensively, we know we just have to put a couple (of runs) up and play good defense behind him."

Smith (5-4, 3.47 ERA) started to find a groove to begin July, pitching six innings in each of his first two starts of the month. Although he was less efficient in his most recent outing, scattering two runs in five innings against the San Diego Padres on Thursday, Smith is poised to reverse course.

"You always want to go deeper into games," said Smith, who has yet to oppose the White Sox in his career. "My mindset whenever I start the game is to finish the game, every time. My pitch count got up there (vs. the Padres). They fouled off a lot of pitches. I walked two guys. You can't stay in games long if you do that."

The White Sox, winners of three of their past four after sustaining a seven-game skid to start the second half, also are looking for length from their starting pitcher.

Right-hander Dylan Covey (1-5, 5.83) is set to return to the rotation after making successive relief appearances on the heels of a disastrous July 13 start at Oakland, when he allowed six runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Covey, who hasn't faced the Marlins in his career, is 1-0 with a 2.20 ERA in three home starts this season. The White Sox would welcome a similar outing as they continue a season-high, 10-game homestand.

"There's still a lot to be done," Chicago manager Rick Renteria said. "We're taking huge strides forward. As these young men continue to grow into who they are who they're becoming, and we continue to add pieces that the organization has from within, we're going to be on solid footing."

Guaranteed Rate Field unveiled a different look during Monday's series opener, a 9-1 Chicago victory that saw the White Sox smack four home runs to back a complete-game four-hitter from righty Ivan Nova. During the All-Star break, the White Sox installed protective netting extending to both foul poles.

Each major league club extended netting to the end of each dugout entering the 2018 season; taking additional measures was at franchises' discretion.

"We are always focused on the ballpark experience for our fans, and, of course, safety is a big part of that consideration," White Sox vice president for communications Scott Reifert told the Chicago Sun-Times. "Research into this step goes back months, but (chairman) Jerry Reinsdorf and (Illinois Sports Facility Authority chairman) Manny Sanchez talked about this in mid-June and quickly agreed that extending the protective netting was the right step to take for the ballpark and our team.

"The game changes, the fan experience constantly changes and we need to evolve, as well."
