Phillies look to rebound against White Sox after marathon
Sat Aug 3, 2019 1:35 AM

The visiting Chicago White Sox will look to clinch a series win when they battle the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.

The White Sox earned a marathon 4-3 victory in 15 innings in the series opener on Friday when Jose Abreu hit the game-winning single off outfielder Roman Quinn in the 15th.

Chicago will be without catcher Welington Castillo, who left the team for a family medical emergency. He'll miss a minimum of three games as catcher Seby Zavala was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte instead of higher-ranked catching prospect Zack Collins.

"It's hopefully a very short stint for Wely," White Sox manager Rick Renteria told reporters. "Just made sense so it wouldn't stop Zack's (Collins) continued work to get him here. Just continue to work, continue to play."

Collins is the franchise's No. 11 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, and he remains at Charlotte.

The White Sox also purchased the contract of first baseman Matt Skole, who registered the game-tying RBI single in the ninth inning of his season debut Friday.

"Once we get out of the National League, DH him, use him at first, give him the middle of the lineup," Renteria said. "He's been grinding it out in the minor leagues, paying his dues. He puts together a good at-bat, has some pop, puts the ball in the gaps."

The White Sox will hand the ball to Ross Detwiler on Saturday, as he has bounced from the bullpen to the starting rotation. Detwiler is 1-1 with a 6.35 earned run average. He has a 6.08 ERA in his last three starts. He is 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in 6 2/3 career innings against the White Sox.

Chicago is 3-8 on the road since the All-Star break.

The Phillies won the series finale against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday and scuffled through a frustrating loss against the White Sox.

Philadelphia's bullpen was already thin, with left-hander Adam Morgan going on the injured list with a left elbow issue. The pen was taxed even further when manager Gabe Kapler said after the loss that Zach Eflin had soreness in his tricep.

As a result, Quinn had to pitch the 14th and 15th innings.

The Phillies left 15 runners on base Friday and were led by Quinn's three hits. Bryce Harper was 0-for-6, and the Phillies struggled to come up with the clutch hit.

Despite the loss, the Phillies remain confident.

"We feel like we have the guys in this clubhouse to get it done," said catcher J.T. Realmuto, who has four home runs in his last eight games. "We just have to come together, play well together and get things rolling."

The Phillies will turn to their ace on Saturday when Aaron Nola takes the mound. Nola is 9-2 with a 3.72 ERA and over his past eight starts, he is 3-1 with a 1.99 ERA. He has never faced the White Sox.

Last Saturday, Nola threw 6 2/3 solid innings in a 9-4 win over the Atlanta Braves. Nola gave up seven hits and four runs while striking out eight and walking three.

"We've got a great group here," Nola told reporters. "We're not out of it. We don't believe we're out of it by any means. Anything can happen. We feel like we can go on a great run."
