Brewers go for sweep for Pirates
Wed Aug 7, 2019 3:36 AM

The Milwaukee Brewers will be going for a three-game series sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday at PNC Park.

That would help make up for the four-game losing streak the Brewers lugged into the series.

The Pirates, conversely, not only have lost four straight and are in a tailspin at 4-20 since the All-Star break, but they are also frustrated over the way they lost Tuesday.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the ninth, Milwaukee loaded the bases with two outs. Catcher Elias Diaz threw a pickoff attempt to first, then the play shifted to a rundown between third and home. It appeared the Pirates got out of the inning, but Diaz was called for interference and the Brewers were credited with the winning run, as Diaz singled and scored for Pittsburgh in the bottom of the ninth.

"Unfortunately, the right call was made," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "Once Elias let go of the baseball, he stayed in the baseline. ... It's called impeding the runner."

Adding to the sting, the Brewers admitted that they lured Pittsburgh into a designed play on that rundown.

"We were baiting a throw to first base," manager Craig Counsell said.

Which brings the Pirates to the point of perhaps wondering what could go wrong next.

"Since the break, we've been bad. There's no other way to put it," said Steven Brault, who started Tuesday and was perfect through four innings but didn't get a decision.

The Pirates might get a bit of a break in that they might not have to deal with Milwaukee slugger Christian Yelich again. He hit two homers in the series opener Monday but was given a game off Tuesday.

Yelich told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he has no physical issues, although Counsell said sitting the outfielder Tuesday was a matter of being proactive to guard against a flare-up of previous back problems, and Counsell indicated Yelich might sit again Wednesday.

Lorenzo Cain is iffy for Wednesday as well after the Milwaukee center fielder left Tuesday's game. He fouled a ball off his left knee.

The Brewers won't be facing Pirates All-Star first baseman Josh Bell for the second straight game.

Bell was one of baseball's hottest hitters earlier this season, but he's been stuck on 27 homers since July 5 and his average has dropped from .308 then to .279.

"I'm going to unplug him," Hurdle said of sitting Bell Tuesday and Wednesday, leading into a team day off Thursday. Hurdle has done the same three-day respite with struggling players before.

"I've done this with a number of players," he said. "Give him some time down. He's worked extremely hard. By getting him out, letting him unplug, maybe unwind and just settle a little bit, (it) could brighten his eyes a little bit when we get to St. Louis (Friday)."

For the finale of this series Wednesday, Milwaukee will go with a bullpen start, or opener. Counsell did not say who after Tuesday's game.

Zach Davies had been scheduled to start Wednesday, but he went on the injured list Monday because of lower back spasms, joining two other starters who are out because of injuries.

So a series of relievers will handle the game, going against Pittsburgh right-handed starter Trevor Williams (4-4, 4.75 ERA).

Williams is 2-3 with a 6.64 ERA in seven starts since he came off the injured list (right side strain), but in his past three starts against Milwaukee, all coming in 2018, he is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 21 strikeouts.

In six career games (five starts) against Milwaukee, he is 3-1 with a 1.38 ERA.
