Dodgers get Ryu back, look to beat D-backs again
Sun Aug 11, 2019 11:37 AM

Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu has been a pain in the Arizona Diamondbacks' neck this season, beating them twice in as many starts.

Ryu (11-2, 1.53 ERA) will attempt to continue that dominance Sunday in his first start since being activated from a short stint on the injured list with some pain in his own neck.

The Diamondbacks will counter with right-hander Mike Leake (9-8, 4.24), who will be making his second start for them since being acquired from Seattle at the trade deadline.

The Dodgers recorded their 13th shutout with a 4-0 victory Saturday, and there was no hangover after benches cleared following the Diamondbacks' 3-2, 11-inning victory Friday. Dugouts emptied after Archie Bradley struck out Will Smith to end the game and then had words with the Dodgers' bench.

"We're trying to win baseball games, and we're going to come out and play with an edge and not take anything from anyone," Bradley told reporters afterward.

As the confrontation wound down, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts pointed and yelled at Arizona starter Robbie Ray, who had taken off his uniform and was wearing black shorts.

"The biggest thing was coming out and acting like nothing happened," said Dodgers second baseman Max Muncy, whose 28th homer broke the Dodgers' season-long three-game homerless stretch Saturday. "Whatever happened (Friday) night was over."

Ryu, the National League Cy Young favorite, has limited Arizona to one run and seven hits in 13 innings this season. He threw six scoreless innings in his most recent start, a 5-1 win in Colorado on July 31, but landed on the injured list after waking up with neck soreness the next day.

Ryu leads the NL in ERA by a wide margin, nearly a run better then No. 2 Max Scherzer (2.41). Ryu also leads the NL with 18 quality starts and an 0.94 WHIP, and he is tied with teammate Clayton Kershaw for third in victories.

Most remarkably, Ryu has walked only 16 batters, the fewest among NL qualifiers, and has given up only 10 home runs in 135 2/3 innings. Greg Maddux issued 23 walks in 1995, the fewest by any Cy Young-winning qualifier, and Ryu has gone 32 3/2 innings without allowing a homer since the Rockies touched him for three in his last loss June 28 at Colorado.

"He is the present day version of David Wells," MLB network analyst Dan Plesac said of Ryu. "He commands the strike zone, flips his breaking ball over for strikes."

Ryu beat the Diamondbacks in the regular-season opener March 28 and gave up only three hits in seven scoreless innings in a 9-0 victory June 4 in Arizona. He is 5-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 15 career starts against them.

Leake gave up 11 hits and three runs (two earned) while receiving no-decision in his Arizona debut, an 8-4 victory over Philadelphia on Tuesday. Seattle picked up $19 million of the $25 million owed Leake through his option year of 2021 in the deal.

Leake is 5-6 with a 4.02 ERA in 12 career appearances against the Dodgers during his time with Cincinnati, San Francisco and St. Louis, and 2-2 with a 2.37 ERA in five games at Dodger Stadium.
