Yankees look to continue crushing Orioles pitching
Tue Aug 13, 2019 11:43 AM

Babe Ruth hit 60 homers in 1927 and Roger Maris went deep 61 times in 1961 for the Yankees. New York is on verge of surpassing both marks in its season series against the Baltimore Orioles.

Already with 59 homers in the first 17 meetings with the Orioles, the Yankees get another chance at bashing long balls Tuesday night when the teams play the third game of a four-game series at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees lead the season series 15-2, and their 14-game winning streak over the Orioles is the longest in a season over an opponent since they took 15 straight against the Philadelphia Athletics in 1954.

Out of all the hitters, nobody has torched the Orioles more than Gleyber Torres, who hit three homers in Monday's doubleheader when the Yankees claimed an 8-5 victory in the opener and an 11-8 win in the nightcap.

Torres has 13 of New York's homers against the Orioles. Half of his career-high 26 homers are off Baltimore, and his total is the most against any opponent in a season since divisional play started in 1969.

"Anytime you have that kind of a year against a team, it's crazy, but I think guys typically have success against one team for whatever reason," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "Gleyber has obviously had a lot of success against them."

Torres is hitting .414 (24-for-58) with 20 RBIs against the Orioles, and five of his six multi-homer games this season are against Baltimore. When he came up with runners on first and second in the eighth inning of the nightcap Monday, the Orioles elected to intentionally walk him.

"He's just a really talented guy obviously," said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde, who was the director of player development for the Chicago Cubs when they signed Torres out of Venezuela in 2013. "He's got a ton of tools and a bright future, and we're making him look like a first-ballot Hall of Famer."

Overall, the Yankees are homering once every 10.25 at-bats against the Orioles. Baltimore has served up 248 homers, an American League record and tied for the second most all-time with the 2017 Reds, 10 away from the major league record set by Cincinnati in 2016.

The Yankees, who head into Tuesday with 12 wins in their past 14 games, are attempting to beat an opponent 16 times for the first time since going 16-6 against Cleveland in 1960.

The Orioles enter Tuesday with seven losses in their last eight games, but on a smaller scale than Torres, Trey Mancini has done well against the Yankees. He homered in both games Monday, and six of his 29 homers are against New York.

Yankees right-hander Domingo German (15-2, 4.05 ERA), who is 6-0 with a 4.38 ERA over his past seven starts, will attempt to become the first 16-game winner in the majors when he starts Tuesday.

German last pitched Thursday in New York's 12-6 win at Toronto, when he allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits in five innings.

He is 3-0 with a 3.09 ERA in five career appearances (three starts) against the Orioles.

Rookie John Means (8-7, 3.36 ERA) starts for Baltimore and hopes to start reversing some recent struggles. He was 7-4 with a 2.50 ERA before the All-Star break but is 1-3 with a 7.11 ERA in four second-half starts.

Means is 1-1 with a 4.82 ERA in four career appearances against New York. In his first start against the Yankees, the left-hander allowed four runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings on Wednesday, failing to complete four innings for the second straight start.
