Falling Angels and White Sox ready for three-game set
Thu Sep 5, 2019 8:52 PM

Torn right rotator cuffs typically are only problematic for pitchers.

As their 2019 season winds down, the Chicago White Sox have unearthed an exception.

White Sox manager Rick Renteria will miss this weekend's series against the visiting Anaheim Angels, beginning with Friday's opener, as he is set to undergo surgery in Chicago to repair the ailment earlier in the day.

The initial plan called for Renteria to have surgery after the season concluded Sept. 29. The persistent pain has accelerated that timetable, however, as Renteria copes with a significant tear.

"It continues to worsen," Renteria said.

Bench coach Joe McEwing is set to guide the club as Chicago seeks just its third win in the past 11 games. The White Sox split four games with the host Cleveland Indians this week, with Chicago snapping a seven-game losing streak along the way.

Renteria missed seven games during the 2018 season, including three to attend his mother's funeral and four to recover from lightheadedness he experienced on a White Sox road series against the Minnesota Twins.

Not all circumstances behind days off are created equal, of course. On Thursday, White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu enjoyed one to receive what Renteria called "a well-deserved rest" entering the weekend, which begins a six-game homestand that includes a visit from the Kansas City Royals.

The expansion of rosters on Sept. 1 eased the club's decision to let Abreu rest.

"He doesn't take too many (days off)," Renteria said. "When you are surrounded by more depth it allows you to give them a little break. One of the few days he's asked for one."

Abreu struggled against Angels pitching when the White Sox played Los Angeles in a road series from Aug. 15-18, batting .188 (3-for-16) as the Angels won three of four games.

Still, two of the hits were home runs that helped Abreu reach a pair of milestones. During Chicago's series at Atlanta this past weekend, Abreu notched the 1,000th hit of his career and collected his 100th RBI of the season.

"It was pretty cool to see someone and to be able to play with someone who is the type of hitter he is," White Sox teammate Matt Skole said. "It's fun to watch every day."

The Angels are 3-12 since the White Sox series, and are coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the Oakland Athletics to begin a six-game road trip.

Los Angeles squandered a 6-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh of Thursday's series finale en route to a 10-6 loss.

Angels left-hander Dillon Peters (3-2, 4.13 ERA) is set to face the White Sox in his first career appearance against them.

Peters was 1-2 with a 4.67 ERA in six appearances in August, including five starts. He took a no-decision in Saturday's home start against the Boston Red Sox, scattering four runs (three earned) and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. Peters credited the importance of keeping an even keel.

"You've got to flush a good inning or a bad inning, because those guys are going in there and they're figuring out how you just beat them," Peters said.

Righty Lucas Giolito (14-8, 3.30 ERA) is slated to start for the White Sox as he looks to build on an Aug. 16 outing against the Angels in which he earned the victory with six innings of two-run ball. Giolito is 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA in two career starts against Los Angeles.
