Giants look to up offense, support Bumgarner vs. Marlins
Sat Sep 14, 2019 4:04 AM

San Francisco left-hander Madison Bumgarner goes after his 10th win of the season while Miami right-hander Robert Dugger chases the first of his career as the starting pitchers are scheduled to duel on the second night of a three-game series between the Giants and visiting Marlins on Saturday.

Right-hander Tyler Beede evened the season series between clubs at two games apiece when he combined with two relievers on a four-hit shutout in the Giants' 1-0 victory on Friday night.

The Giants (71-77) were able to win despite continuing their hitting woes at home. They totaled just 29 hits and scored 14 runs while losing three of four to the Pirates to open their current seven-game homestand, then managed just nine hits and the one run in the series opener against the Marlins (51-96).

The Giants have homered just twice in the first five games of the homestand.

"I think more than anything, we have a tough time scoring here," Giants manager Bruce Bochy understated to the media during the homestand. "I think it's been the offense as much as anything. We've had some pretty good days on the road, but here at home, for some reason, we just have a hard time getting it going."

Bumgarner (9-8, 3.77 ERA) got little help in a 4-2 loss at Miami earlier this season, giving up two runs on six hits in six innings and taking the loss.

The staff ace pitched the homestand opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday and left with a 4-2 lead, only to have the San Francisco bullpen sabotage his effort.

Not only was Bumgarner denied a 10th win this season, but also a 61st career win at Oracle Park, which would have broken a tie with Matt Cain for the stadium record.

Bumgarner hasn't helped himself offensively of late, going 0 for his last 12. He has 18 career home runs, but just one this season, and that came in his second start of the year on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers in April.

That said, his bat has gotten the attention of Dugger (0-2, 4.29), who has never faced the Giants in his four career starts.

"(He's) nothing to fool around with at the plate," the 24-year-old noted to reporters as he was preparing mentally for his start this week. "He can be a problem at the plate, so I've got to make sure I make pitches against him, too."

Dugger has been his own worst enemy on the mound, having allowed 11 walks in 21 innings. He had four in just three innings in his last start -- an 8-3 loss Monday against Milwaukee -- helping drive his pitch count quickly up to 77.

Marlins pitchers have done a job on Giants hitters in their four head-to-heads this season, limiting San Francisco to nine runs. The Giants' two wins have been by 3-1 and 1-0 scores.

Friday's shutout loss was the Marlins' 22nd of the season, 12 of which have come on the road. Their 233 runs on the road are 77 fewer than any other National League team, and their .234 road batting average is better than just one NL team (Colorado, .230).

The Giants' shutout in the series opener was their eighth of the season. Beede has started the last two, a pair of 1-0 wins.
