Orioles aim for series win against Blue Jays
Wed Sep 25, 2019 2:04 AM

The Baltimore Orioles have a chance to win their second straight series Wednesday night when they meet the host Toronto Blue Jays in the rubber match of a three-game series.

The Orioles pulled even in the series with an 11-4 victory Tuesday night as Trey Mancini had a career-best five hits with one RBI to extend his season-best hitting streak to 11 games.

The Blue Jays swept the Orioles in a three-game series last week in Baltimore. The Orioles completed their home schedule by taking two of three from the Seattle Mariners on the weekend.

The Orioles are scheduled to start right-hander Gabriel Ynoa (1-9, 5.65 ERA) Wednesday against Blue Jays right-hander Jacob Waguespack (4-5, 4.75).

Ynoa has faced the Blue Jays four times (two starts) in his career, all this season, and is 0-2 with a 4.40 ERA.

Waguespack will be making his 13th career start (16th appearance) as he faces the Orioles for the first time this season. He is 2-3 with a 5.88 ERA against AL East opponents.

Mancini is 24-for-51 (.471) with six doubles, four home runs and 17 RBIs during the streak.

"Over the course of the season, what you've seen with Trey is, he's getting some experience and you're starting to see more plate discipline," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. "He's not chasing the sinker down and in or letting the ball run in on his hands. Doing a better job laying off the slider down and away. He's put really good swings on balls lately because he's gotten in hitters' counts. When you grow as a hitter, you'll see him hit the ball in the air a lot more with authority."

Dwight Smith Jr., a Blue Jays castoff in spring training, had a good game Tuesday as well. The outfielder was 3-for-4 with his 13th homer of the season and was hit by a pitch.

The Blue Jays already have clinched the season series with the Orioles at 10-8.

Toronto's Cavan Biggio walked once in four plate appearances Tuesday and has reached base safely in 25 consecutive games, the longest such streak by the Blue Jays this season. Russ Adams has the club's rookie record, reaching base 27 straight games in 2005.

Toronto's rookie third baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was 0-for-3 Tuesday as DH to end a seven-game hit streak. He has vowed to change his offseason program so that he can maintain his strength for the whole season.

"Right now, for example, I don't feel 100 percent," he said this week through an interpreter. "I'm a little bit tired right now and based on that, I'm not going to change my routine that I did before -- I'm just going to add the weight program plan. I'm going to do all that to come back to spring training strong, with added strength, because I want to play 162 games."

He also has made 17 errors and will work on improving his fielding at third base.

"I know I've made some errors and I need to get better with that," Guerrero said. "I will sit with (third-base coach) Luis Rivera at the end of the season, we're going to prepare a good plan. We haven't done it yet, but we will at the end because definitely I want to keep getting better at third base, but I feel good about it so far."

Guerrero is batting .274 with a .781 OPS, 15 homers and 69 RBIs in 121 games.
