Reds-Cardinals game postponed by rain; doubleheader Aug. 31
Wed Jun 5, 2019 10:43 PM

ST. LOUIS (AP) The scheduled game between the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals was postponed because of rain Wednesday night.

It will be made up Aug. 31 as part of a day-night doubleheader.

The game was called after an 83-minute delay. Rain started right around when play was supposed to begin and didn't let up. The forecast called for showers deep into the night.

Anthony DeSclafani (2-3, 4.97 ERA) had been slated to pitch for the Reds against Dakota Hudson (4-3, 3.94). Both were simply pushed back a day to start Thursday afternoon.

The Cardinals have had five of their last eight games either delayed or postponed by rain. The total delay time is just under nine hours.

By now St. Louis manager Mike Shildt is used to handling the rough weather, and he's comfortable with the idea of a day-night doubleheader on the final day of August.

"We've got the rosters expanding the next day," Shildt said. "It will be fine."

Cincinnati has won seven of its last 10 road games.

MOVIN' ON UP

St. Louis RHP Ryan Helsley was recalled from Triple-A Memphis, and rookie LHP Genesis Cabrera was sent down after giving up three earned runs over 4 2/3 innings in a 4-1 loss to Cincinnati on Tuesday. Helsley was recalled for the third time this season. He has made four appearances and has allowed three earned runs over eight innings.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Reds: RHP Robert Stephenson is responding well to treatment for a cervical strain in his neck. He will likely throw a bullpen in the next couple of days, according to manager David Bell. Stephenson was placed on the injured list May 31.

UP NEXT

Reds: DeSclafani will make his 12th start of the season, third against St. Louis. In his first one against the Cardinals on April 14 in Mexico, the right-hander allowed four runs but did not figure in the decision. He tossed six shutout innings in a 12-1 win April 26 at Busch Stadium.

Cardinals: Hudson has allowed just eight earned runs in his last four outings, all quality starts. He has given up just one homer dating back to April 27 and hasn't served one up in 27 2/3 innings since Bryce Harper connected for Philadelphia on May 7.
