Head coach Scottie Montgomery indicated Monday that he plans to get Howe more involved in the passing game moving forward, Stephen Igoe of 247 Sports reports. "We need to get our backs in the passing game," Montgomery said. "I've thought we've missed our backs way too many times underneath, checking the ball down. No quarterback likes to be known as 'Charlie Checkdown,' but what we need to do is get our better players the ball in space. I think some of our most effective players with the ball in space are Hussein Howe and Anthony Scott. We haven't done it and we need to get better at it."
East Carolina head coach Scottie Montgomery suggested Monday that Herring was the favorite to emerge as the Pirates' starting quarterback this season, Zach Maskavich of WNCT.com reports. "We think that we will be led this year by Raleigh native Reid Herring at the quarterback position," Montgomery said. "He has done just a tremendous job for us, growing the program, growing our expectations in the program and the leadership that comes with leading the program on the field."
