NHL Game Preview - San Jose at Boston

Gustav Nyquist did all that he could to take down the San Jose Sharks on Sunday afternoon.

Now, he's one of them.

Hours after scoring a goal against them, Nyquist was traded from the Detroit Red Wings to San Jose for a 2019 second-round draft pick and 2020 conditional third-round selection.

The 29-year-old Swede is expected to make his debut with the Sharks on Tuesday when they conclude their four-game road trip against the Boston Bruins, who are riding a 13-game point streak (9-0-4).

Nyquist's goal on Sunday gave the Red Wings the lead late in the first period, but San Jose captain Joe Pavelski netted his fifth career hat trick as the Sharks improved to 9-2-1 in its last 12 games with a 5-3 victory.

"Gustav is a talented, versatile forward who plays with speed and a strong hockey sense," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said in a statement. "His track record of strong play and character speak for themselves and we're very excited to add him to our dressing room."

Nyquist, who recorded 16 goals and 33 assists in 62 games with the Red Wings, joins a San Jose team that now features nine players with 40 or more points and resides three points behind first-place Calgary in the Pacific Division.

Pavelski's hat trick pushed his team-leading goal total to 35. The 34-year-old also registered a three-point performance (one goal, two assists) in a 6-5 overtime loss to Boston on Feb. 18.

San Jose's Joe Thornton posted his third career hat trick last week, against his former team no less. His first two three-goal performances were achieved when he was playing with the Bruins, with whom he spent his first eight NHL seasons.

Jake DeBrusk (one goal, two assists) and fellow forward David Krejci (three assists) capped their three-point performances against the Sharks by setting up defenseman Charlie McAvoy's goal 3:59 into overtime.

Boston also was active ahead of the NHL trade deadline, following up last week's acquisition of Charlie Coyle from Minnesota by reeling in fellow forward Marcus Johansson from New Jersey in exchange for a 2019 second-round pick and a fourth-round pick in 2020.

Johansen, 28, has been heating up with 12 points (six goals, six assists) in his last 13 games before the Devils scratched him as a means to preserve his health prior to the trade deadline.

As for Coyle, the 26-year-old Massachusetts native logged 16:36 of ice time while centering a line with Peter Cehlarik and David Backes during Saturday's 2-1 shootout loss in St. Louis. Coyle scored in the six-round shootout, but the Bruins saw their season-high seven-game win streak come to a halt against the Blues.

"Playing a new system is a little different obviously, but I had my linemates helping me out and talking a lot, which is huge," Coyle said. "I think I adjusted decently. There are some things that are different from what I'm used to, but I'll learn as we go here."

Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy was pleased with Coyle, as well as the team's 4-0-1 road trip.

"We got nine out of 10 points, the guys had some fun together, bonded a little bit," Cassidy said.

"To me, they're all heavy teams, bigger teams, so you can get yourself worn down as you go along. I know some of them are in the playoff position, some aren't. At the end of the day, I was really happy with the way we played, mostly -- especially (Saturday)."

San Jose finished its trading on Monday by acquiring Jonathan Dahlen from Vancouver in exchange for fellow forward Linus Karlsson. A former second-round pick by Ottawa, the 21-year-old Dahlen has yet to play in the NHL.
