Knights set to show off Stone against Stars
Mon Feb 25, 2019 9:14 PM

The Vegas Golden Knights made perhaps the league's biggest move at Monday's trade deadline, acquiring winger Mark Stone from Ottawa.

Stone is expected to be in uniform for the Golden Knights as they host Dallas after a 6-3 loss at home to Winnipeg on Friday. The setback was the third in a row for Vegas, which is 1-5-1 in their past seven games and has just three wins in its past 11 contests.

The 26-year-old Stone is one of the top offensive players in the league, with 62 points in 59 games this season. Stone reportedly agreed to an eight-year contract extension with the Knights that would pay him an average of $9.5 million per season, according to TSN.

On Friday, the Golden Knights allowed two goals in the opening 1:28 against Winnipeg. Vegas has allowed the first goal in nine of their past 10 games.

"I don't like what I'm seeing, and I don't like our game," Vegas coach Gerard Gallant said in the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "We play good here and there, then we find a way to lose. We battled back from (down 2-0) and then take dumb penalties. There was a lot of that."

The Stars mustered one of their gutsiest wins of the season on Sunday afternoon, a 4-3 victory at Chicago, less than 24 hours after they slept through a 3-0 home loss to Carolina.

But the victory, which was a huge way to open a crucial four-game road trip, came at a price.

Mats Zuccarello, who was acquired in a trade with the New York Rangers on Saturday had a goal and an assist for Dallas but suffered a broken right arm that is expected to keep him out of the lineup for at least the next four weeks. He will undergo surgery.

"It's fun to be here -- I can tell right away it's a good team, felt like we played a good game," Zuccarello told NHL.com after his first contest with the Stars. "It's really, really sad right now that (the injury) happened, but hopefully I can come back quick."

Alexander Radulov also had a goal and an assist in the victory, while Radek Faksa and Jason Spezza added tallies for the Stars. Anton Khudobin, back in the pipes for the eighth time in nine games, stopped 44 shots for Dallas.

"It is inspiring to watch those players, watch our team as a group, overcome the adversity we had to overcome," Stars coach Jim Montgomery said after the win in Chicago.

"We had six forwards get injured at different times. We had four people get cut and there were a lot of emotions in the game, a lot of swings. On a back-to-back, pretty impressive for our group to dig down like they did. It just shows the fight they have inside themselves."

Stars captain Jamie Benn sustained an upper-body injury in the first period and did not return. He is considered doubtful for Tuesday's game.

The Golden Knights captured the first meeting of the year between the teams, winning 4-2 Dec. 9 in Vegas.
