League Message

  • Welcome to Wasted Talent.

The rules and settings for this league are very complicated and it is not a league for any amature pooly. A solid knowledge of the NHL processes, included waiver wire will be beneficial.

The players available in this pool are only players that are currently drafted by an NHL franchise. Any player outside the NHL system will be subject to entry waivers before becoming a free agent.. Every year, we will conduct league entry draft similar to the way the NHL conducts it's own entry draft. In an ideal world, our draft would be conducted after the NHL draft, yet prior to the start of UFA season on July 1st.

The league is set up as weekly head-to-head match ups, determining a winner, there will be no ties for a weekly match-up, please see tie-breaker rules. Each team will compete through the season, and will end up with a win-loss record, the best win loss records from each division will make the playoffs as top seeds and the remaining next best 6 records also qualify for the post season.

The make up of your team will consist of 23 NHL level players, having no more or no less then 19 set to your active roster daily, any other number of active players will make your lineup illegal. The remaining 4 players will be allocated to your bench, and there are no positional restrictions. The make up of the 19 active players will consist of 1 goalie, 3-4 C, 3-4 LW, 3-4 RW, 0-2 F, 6-7 D. The reason for the different possibilities for the positions is to allow line-up flexibility, Sometime NHL teams will play 7 Dmen, and 11 Forwards, this will give you the flexibility in setting your line-up. The Forward is not a required position, but allows you the flexibility to use the position instead of one of the C, LW or RW positions for a player. Each team is allowed MAX 2 goalies at the NHL level.

The minor team settings will allow for a maximum of 12 players when the league first drafts. Next year we will draft the remaining 11 for a max. of 46 total players / contracts.

The inaugural draft will be for 35 rounds. Drafting 12 players that will be minor eligible is paramount so that you will be able to set your roster before the start of the season. After the draft, all non-drafted players will go to the Free Agent. There will be a short period of grace, where you will be able to tweak your team with the available free agents, and allowed drops to tweak your team prior to the start of the regular season. This free for all and dropping is a one time thing only. After the inaugrual draft, the draft will consist only on NHL entry draft (you will be allowed to draft any player on the free agent list). You can only draft to fill the empty slots on your roster.

The injured reserved position is theoretically un-limited, however only players that have been placed on the injured reserve list by their NHL clubs and suspended players will qualify. Players listed as day-to-day do not qualify for the IR.

The scoring system is very in depth.  Please familiarize yourself with the scoring system, it is the key to setting your line-up.

The line-ups are set daily, changes are allowed up to 5 minutes before the first game of the day.

Trading is not only allowed, but encouraged, espescially in the off season. There is no limit to the trades a team can make. The trade voting system is Commishioner.  If a trade goes through uncontested, it will not be required to be justified. I think were all big boys, and if you make a trade, you pretty much should know what your doing, so unless cheating or Collusion is suspected then a trade should go through.

Claims and drops are going to be very restricted. The idea is for managers to be very responsible in the players they sign to their team, and not just play the waiver wire to keep a fully active line-up. All claims are viewable by all teams, this allows you to make better decisions regarding waiver wire pick ups. If you see the team with a better waiver priority has a claim in on the player you wanted, you can then select a new player rather then lose a turn at the waiver wire.

All free agents are also on a automated priority claim system, in reverse serpentine. The free agent claim system runs daily, and the priority order is reset weekly on Monday Morning.

From the start of the season, each team will be allowed 1 free agent or waiver wire pick up a week to a maximum of 15 in the year, so use them wisely.

If you are dropping a player under contract in order to pick up a Free Agent or waiver Wire player, you are responsable for all contracts you sign. IF you are dropping a player to waivers for the purpose of placing them in the minors, you must POST in the forum. IF the player clears waivers, then the Commissioner(s) will then place that player in the minors for you. That should be the only time a Commissioner should be involved in a transaction.

The waiver wire is the most complicated part of this league. Where all teams will have a very complete minor roster, any player you wish to demote to the minors will be subject to waiver, same as the NHL, same qualifications apply. Please familirize yourself with the NHL rules on waivers. https://www.capfriendly.com has an excellent tool for calculating whether a player qualifies for waivers, or is exempt.

    1) Any player that is exempt from waivers is considered a minor.
    2) The settings in Fantrax are very rough, https://www.capfriendly.com shall be used to determine if a player is exempt from waivers.
    3) A player up to the age of 23 can be placed on waivers, and if he clears waivers can be placed in the minors without a cap penalty. To do this, you will have to post up in the Forum under the thread for waiver requests, and the Commissioner will drop that player for you, placing the player on waivers. If that player is picked up on waivers, they go to the new teams starting lineup not minors. Once they clear waivers, the Commissioner will place that player in the minors for you.
    4) Any player above the age of 23 can be waived if not waiver exempt, and if the player clears waivers, that player can be placed in the minors with applicable cap penalty. This is know as the Wade Redden rule, and only 925K cap relief will apply. For us to apply this, the Commissioner will have to manually adjust a team's individual cap.

In special cases, a player can be dropped or "buried" in the minors, but the Wade Redden Rule for cap recapture will apply, and the limited cap relief will be applied manually. For this, you will have to apply to the Commisioner in order for that player to be dropped, and Cap adjusted accordingly.

*For these players, the first NHL season is a season in which a player dresses for at least 11 NHL games.
The exemption period is then reduced to three years for forwards and defensemen and four years for goalies.
When you draft a player his entry level contract is valid for 3 years. A contract can be extended after 3 years to a maximum of 8 years (same as NHL) after which time that player becomes a free agent.

Every player drafted or pick up from free agent pool or WW will have a Entry Level Contract of no more that 3 Years
3 to 1 year contracts shown as 3 year=1st  2 years=2nd or 1years=3rd. After the ELC ends you have a choice to extend the contract then it will be given a year example 2022 after that season 2022-23 the Contract end player must return to Free Agent Pool or WW. If it has a year assigned to the contract thats it. Only allowed 1 extention per player.

When you select a player off of the waiver wire, you will assume that players contract in full, including duration and be placed into your lineup not minors.

The Waiver wire order will always be in reverse order to standings and non-snaking. After a claim, the priority order will rotate so that the team to make the latest claim will be in last priority. The claim order will reset once a week.

If you pick up a player from the free agent list, you get the choice and have to name the ELC length of contract 1st 2nd or 3rd for that player, the Commish will manually adjust. This allows for 1 year contracts, or up to a maximum of a 3 year contract.

When you have a player under contract, that players contract remains in force on your team for the duration of his contract. Be weary of picking up players, you will be stuck with them on your team untill the contract expires, or you as manager have the option for a non-compliance buy-out at the end of the season.

At the end of the season, once the playoffs have been completed each team will be allowed 2 compliance buyouts.

Non-compliance buy-outs will be allowed, and the team will encur Cap penalties. Teams are permitted to buyout a players contract to obtain a reduced salary cap hit. The buyout amount is a function of the players age at the time and total salary of the buyout, and are as follows:
    • 1/3 of the remaining contract value, if the player is younger than 26 at the time of the buyout 33.3 % off total salary
    • 2/3 of the remaining contract value, if the player is 26 or older at the time of the buyout 66.6 % off off total salary

Each Team will be allowed to sign 1 franchise player at the end of the 2017-18 season. A franchise player will be exempt from contract duration only and you get a 25% relief on his salary. In order to name a player as your franchise player, you will have had to have drafted that player, not acquire them by trade. As long as this franchise player remains on your team, his contract will be valid. If you trade your franchise player, his contract will automatically go back to an ELC size contract, which you have the option to extend after that contract. Any team trading away their franchise player cannot name a new franchise player until after the completion of the league playoffs. A franchise player will have to be named before the start of the regular season. In order for a player to be named "Franchise Player" that player will have had to have been drafted by your team.  Once named, your franchise player remains your franchise player unless he is traded, retires or is on long term injured list (ie: Pronger, Savard) Once traded, you can name a new franchise player before the start of the next season.  Once you trade away your franchise player, if you should end up re-acquiring him through trade or from the waiver wire, then that player by default shall be re-named your franchise player.

Actions taken by NHL teams or players will not reflect in your team as a penalty, Ex: Luongo retires, and the recapture penalty in the new CBA will penalize Vancouver, but it will not however cause any penalties to your fantasy team here.

All players in your line-up have to be playing at the NHL level. The use of players in your minor system green flags being placed in your active line-up to make cap will not be allowed. No green flags in your  line-up. Of course we know that from time to time players are moved, and the green flag comes and goes with it, however some teams were using players that had very very few NHL games played in their active line up. This is something that there is no setting for to identify, this is something that we will have to self police, and I would appreciate that everyone would self police themselves.

If a player on your roster remains a free agent at the time of our league draft, those free agent players are considered free drops if desired.

When you make a FA pick up, you need to name the length of his contract from between 1 and 3 years = 1st. Not naming the length is default 3 Years = 1st. 2 years = 2nd and 1 year = 3rd.
    3rd being the renewal stage.
