Desmond, Rockies slam Padres 10-1, stop San Diego streak
Sat Jun 3, 2017 9:26 PM

SAN DIEGO (AP) Tyler Chatwood rebounded from his worst start of the season and ensured San Diego would not get its first six-game winning streak in four years.

Nolan Arenado hit his 14th homer, Ian Desmond added a grand slam and the Rockies beat the Padres 10-1 Saturday.

Chatwood (5-7) allowed four hits in eight innings with eight strikeouts and one walk. Chatwood also had a pair of hits as the Rockies won for just the second time in six games.

"Through his mannerisms and his body language, he exuded confidence and I think it showed up in his pitching," Rockies manager Bud Black said.

In his previous outing, Chatwood gave up six runs over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to Seattle.

"I worked on some stuff in between starts and it paid off out there," Chatwood said. "I was able to stay under control the whole game."

Black previously mentioned how Chatwood's emotions often get the best of him.

"I like my pitchers to throw like a linebacker," Black said. "But sometimes they got to throw like a quarterback."

Chatwood threw a season-high 114 pitches.

"I had a good feel for all the pitches," he said. "When I had a guy set up, I was able to make the pitch."

Jordan Lyles pitched a perfect the ninth.

Jhoulys Chacin (4-5), facing his former team for the first time, allowed four runs - three earned - and six hits in five innings, dropping to 2-1 in five starts at home this year.

"I was throwing strikes, that's the main thing for me," Chacin said. "But with their good lineup, you have to make good pitches through all of the game."

The Padres had been on their longest winning streak since August 2015; they have not won six straight since June 2013.

"If we're going to grow as a club, laying off that curveball in the dirt with two strikes is big for us," Padres manager Andy Green said. "We never really strung together a lot of good at-bats."

Gerardo Parra hit an RBI single in the fourth after Carlos Gonzalez reached on a one-out popup to shallow right that second baseman Yangervis Solarte allowed to fall behind him for an error, thinking right fielder Hunter Renfroe had called him off.

DJ LeMahieu, who had three hits, had an RBI single in the fifth and scored on Arenado's two-run homer into the second deck in left.

Austin Hedges homered to cut the deficit to 4-1 in the sixth, and Desmond broke open the game in the seventh against off Jose Torres with his third career slam - his first since April 2014.

"I left one pitch over the play and that guy hit it hard," Chatwood said.
