Virginia's Bennett declines raise, asks for staff pay hike
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) Virginia men's basketball coach Tony Bennett has declined a pay raise offered by the school and instead asked school officials for additional compensation for his staff and program improvement.
University officials said in a news release Monday that Bennett did sign a one-year contract extension, but instead of a pay hike for himself, the coach asked athletic director Carla Williams to focus his staff and the program.
Guy recorded 24 points (8-15 FG, 4-9 3Pt, 4-4 FT) and three rebounds across 45 minutes in Monday's 85-77 victory over Texas Tech, and was named the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player following the victory.
Guy was fouled on a three-pointer with 0.6 second remaining and calmly sunk all three free throws to give the Cavaliers a one-point win over Auburn on Saturday in the Final Four of the NCAA tournament. He had 15 points (5-11 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 3-3 FT), four assists and three rebounds.
Diakite did not return to Saturday's loss to Duke after colliding with teammate DeAndre Hunter, the Daily Progress reports. He had seven points (3-4 FG, 1-1 3Pt) and three rebounds in 10 minutes before leaving.
